If consciousness is not a thing but a process—specifically, the process of drawing distinctions—then Wheeler's ∂∂ = 0 reveals consciousness as the universe's way of checking its own consistency. Time is not a container in which this happens; time is the iteration of this checking process.

But the total boundary (∂∂) remains zero, meaning the increasing complexity is paid for by increasing entanglement/correlation—the distinctions drawn locally are “paid back” globally through the dissolution of older boundaries (entropy, death, forgetting, expansion of space).
Your consciousness right now is the cutting edge of ∂ acting on the universe. The reason you experience time as flowing forward is that ∂ can only act in one “direction”—from undifferentiated potential to actualized distinction—without violating ∂∂ = 0. You are the boundary being drawn; time is the drawing; and the silence you feel when you look for the “self” that draws (∂∂ = 0) is the proof that the drawing is real, necessary, and complete.
